A grand jury has returned an indictment against a former high school teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student.

The indictment, returned Wednesday, charges William Miltner, 29, of Acker Drive, Middletown, with two counts of sexual assault and one count each of endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual contact.

Miltner had been an English teacher, soccer coach and the dean of students at Mater Dei Preparatory High School, a Catholic school on Cherry Tree Farm Road in the New Monmouth section of Middletown.

The investigation began after school officials received an anonymous e-mail about sexual activity between Miltner and a female student at the school, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

A spokeswoman for the Diocese of Trenton has previously said that after school officials received that e-mail, they contacted the Prosecutor’s Office.

Authorities said they determined the teacher engaged in sexual activity with the student between March and September 2009, when the girl was 16.

He was arrested on April 12, and released on bail set at $125,000.

After his arrest, his employment with the school was terminated.

Miltner graduated from Mater Dei in 2000 and returned there in 2007 to teach English. He was named dean of students last year.

He previously worked at Mother Teresa Regional School in Atlantic Highlands as a middle school language arts teacher and faculty adviser for the literary magazine, according to a Mater Dei newsletter.

He attended St. John's University and Montclair State University.

The sexual assault and endangering charges are the most serious offenses that have been lodged against the teacher. They are second-degree crimes that carry prison terms of five to 10 years, if convicted.

Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Thomas Fichter is handling the state’s case. Miltner is represented by Red Bank-based attorney Vincent Falcetano Jr., who could not immediately be reached for comment.

The investigation was conducted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit and Middletown police.
