The Taoiseach has called the Vatican's role in the handling of branded the allegations of clerical sex abuse as uncovered in the Cloyne report as disgraceful.

Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore is seeking a meeting with the Papal Nuncio to discuss the Vatican's role in the Cloyne scandal.

The Cloyne report published yesterday focused on how the Catholic Church and the State handled allegations of clerical child sex abuse, between 1996 and 2009.

It branded the Vatican entirely unhelpful over its dismissal of mandatory reporting guidelines.

Last night the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Mr Gilmore wants to hold face to face talks with the Papal Nuncio to discuss the report and its findings.

The Taoiseach told reporters that the Government intended to send a strong message to the Vatican.
