Sentencing was delayed Friday for a former Fairbanks pastor convicted of sexual abuse of a minor.

Shawn Anthony Justice, 34, was convicted in November.

The delay came at the request of defense attorney Steve Hansen, who wants a clinical social worker to testify in his client’s defense. The witness was not available to testify because his office had not told her about the hearing, he said

Superior Court Judge Michael McConahy said he did not want to delay the hearing, but felt he needed to give Justice the opportunity to call an important witness. He acknowledged a group of about 15 people in the audience, among them several members of Justice’s former congregation.

“There’s a bunch of people here who have been waiting a long time to do this,” he said.

The hearing was rescheduled for Aug. 4, a date chosen that will give the expert witness and the victim’s family a chance to attend.

Justice was a pastor at Corinthian Baptist Church in 2007 when he met the teenage girl with whom he began a sexual relationship.

He was dismissed in 2008 and led a satellite church, also in Fairbanks.

At his November trial, jurors returned guilty verdicts on eight sexual abuse of a minor charges. It deadlocked on three and found him not guilty on one.

Justice spoke about plans to appeal his conviction at a hearing Thursday.
