The Milwaukee Archdiocese is being ordered to start a publicity campaign to let possible victims of priest abuse know that time is running out to file a claim. This comes as the Archdiocese goes through bankruptcy hearings.

Seventeen victims filed claims that they suffered sexual abuse by clergy and a cover-up when church officials found out. Many of those lived at St. John's School for the Deaf decades ago.

The victims wanted former Archbishop Rembert Weakland and retired Bishop Richard Sklba to testify in state court about an alleged cover-up. The federal judge said no, but victims could file a motion for the federal bankruptcy court to hear the stories

Meanwhile, the archdiocese is being ordered by the court to put the word out both nationally and locally, on their website, notifying parishes and schools, that other victims have until February 1st to file claims against the Milwaukee Archdiocese or it will be too late.

The cases and lawsuits in state court are frozen now by the church's bankruptcy actions. There are $17 million in claims against the Archdiocese from other creditors in addition to the sex abuse victims. The federal bankruptcy judge will hear the case on August 12.
