Update: The Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests has released its response to Rigali's impending resignation, calling it a "reckless assumption" that a replacement will prove more effective in preventing clergy abuse and cover-ups than Rigali.

"Whoever replaces Rigali will likely be less cold and aloof, but that means nothing when it comes to the safety of kids," the statement reads in part. "A more charming personal demeanor does not guarantee greater concern for children."

Tom MacDonald will have a full report later on the Archdiocese's next steps.

Original report: Could it be true, will Justin Rigali resign?

That's what the National Catholic Reporter is saying, reporting a press conference is expected this week, during which time the Philadelphia cardinal will announce his resignation and a replacement will be named.

The Daily News picked up on the NCR story, and reports only that sources close to the Archdiocese have confirmed Rigali will resign. Four possible replacements are listed in the NCR report, including Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta, known for confronting sexual abuse by clergy.
