A police investigation is under way and a local priest has been removed from ministry, after officials from the Diocese of Scranton said he allegedly furnished alcohol to minors.

Scranton Police Chief Dan Duffy said no charges have been filed at this time against the Rev. Michael O'Leary, but the Police Department is investigating the situation. Father O'Leary was pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Church, 1703 Jackson St., Scranton.

Diocesan officials said they found out Father O'Leary allegedly gave alcohol to two underage individuals on Sunday.

Diocese of Scranton spokesman Bill Genello said the church immediately informed police about the situation as well as the parents of the two individuals and the appropriate superiors from the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, of which Father O'Leary was a member.

"We were notified last (Sunday) night, Mr. Genello said. "He left the parish today (Monday)."

Father O'Leary, who had been pastor at St. Michael's Church since January 2010, has been removed from the parish, pending the outcome of the police investigation, Mr. Genello said.
