So what's next for Cardinal Justin Rigali?

Rigali is expected to head to Knoxville, Tenn., to visit his best friend, Bishop Richard Stika, who has "built a home for him to get away from it all," said Michael Sean Winters, a blogger for the National Catholic Reporter. Additionally, Rigali will be making trips to Rome as he is still a member of the Congregation of Bishops.

Rocco Palmo, author of the Catholic-oriented blog "Whispers in the Loggia," said to expect Rigali to stay away from the scene for six months to a year so that his successor, Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput, can get things in order.

"I doubt we will see too much of him in Philly," Palmo said. "Rigali will still have a place in the family obviously, but the focus now shifts."

Rigali, 76, took over for Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua in 2003. He faced a barrage of criticism after a grand-jury report released in February slammed the Archdiocese for failing to investigate claims of priest sexual abuse.

Rigali turned in his letter of resignation on his 75th birthday, but he didn't expect it to be accepted so soon, Winters told the Daily News.

The cardinal had his sights set on the job formerly held by Cardinal John Foley as Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, a ceremonial position based in Rome where he would do charitable work, Winters said.

But with the latest scandal still simmering, the job he had hoped for has been put on hold.
