The National Catholic Reporter reported on Monday afternoon that Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput has been appointed as the new archbishop of Philadelphia.

The NCR said the appointment will be announced by the Vatican on Tuesday.

Chaput will replace Cardinal Justin Rigali, who is expected to resign this week.

Rigali came under fire after a grand jury report released in February accused the Archdiocese of a widespread coverup of predatory priests over decades, alleging that as many as 37 priests remained active in the ministry despite credible accusations against them. In March, Rigali announced the suspensions of 21 priests accused of sexual abuse, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Officials with the Denver Archdiocese called the report "speculation."

"The rumors have been going around for weeks," said Jeanette R. De Melo, director of communications for the Archdiocese of Denver. "We’ll have to wait for Rome to know the reality."

Chaput is from Kansas, but has ties to Pennsylvania. He earned his bachelor of arts in philosophy from St. Fidelis College Seminary in Herman, Pa., and served as executive secretary and director of communications for the Capuchin Province of St. Augustine in Pittsburgh from 1974-1977.

Pope John Paul II appointed Chaput as archbishop of Denver in 1997.
