Taoiseach Enda Kenny saw his approval ratings rise by 16 points in an Irish Times/MRBI poll which was published yesterday. The Islandeady-native has seen his satisfaction rating as Fine Gael leader go from 37 points to 53 points since the last poll was taken in February. The publication of the poll which was taken of 1,000 voters across the country between last Friday and Monday came on the heels of the Taoiseach’s speech in the Dail on Wednesday afternoon in relation to the Cloyne Report.

In an unprecedented attack on the Vatican, Kenny said that the Vatican’s attitude to the investigations that were being carried out in Cloyne was the “polar opposite of the radicalism, the humility and the compassion that the church had been founded on.”

He also went on to say that “The rape and torture of children were downplayed or ‘managed’ to uphold instead, the primacy of the institution, its power, standing and ‘reputation’.”
