The Bishop of Kerry Bill Murphy has reissued an appeal to sexually abused people to come forward. He has also called an independent Diocesan inquiry in the case, this week. Bishop said that the Diocese of Kerry was completely committed to safeguarding children and young people.

Bishop Murphy told The Kerryman that he would welcome an inquiry into the case.

He said, "I renew my appeal to all who were sexually abused by clergy to come forward if they have not already done so. I assure them that they will be treated with respect and dignity".

He further said that they have put in place all the policies, procedures and personnel to see that young children and people are receiving proper care or not. The Bishop also said that they are working together with the HSE and the gardaí and the National Office to resolve the matter.

Meanwhile, the Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois, Dr. Colm O'Reilly, indicated on Monday that the report into child sexual abuse within the diocese will be published shortly.

Bishop O'Reilly also said that in his opinion the church guidelines were becoming even stricter than State rules on the matter.
