The latest edition of the independent Kansas City-based National Catholic Reporter says that members of the Belleville Association of Priests “recently released a list of 20 alleged instances of fiscal and authority abuses” by Bishop Edward Braxton. The piece by veteran church observer Robert McClory of Chicago, also claims that the diocesan annual appeal is down $500,000 from when Braxton took over in 2005. Part of the reason, the story suggests is Braxton’s continuing battle against a clergy abuse victim, Jim Wisniewski, who won a $5 million jury verdict against church officials in 2008.
