The Vatican has recalled its ambassador to Ireland days after an unprecedented attack by the Irish prime minister on the Roman Catholic church over child sex abuse by priests.

The decision plunged relations between the Vatican and Ireland to a new low.

A Vatican spokesman said yesterday that the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza, had been summoned back to Rome so he could discuss the church's response to the Clonyne Report with Pope Benedict XVI and senior officials.

Recalled: Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza, the Vatican's ambassador to Ireland, left, has been recalled to Rome after Irish PM Enda Kenny, right, launched a stinging attack on the Catholic church's role in covering sex abuse by priests

The report, published earlier this month, accused the Vatican of covering up for paedophile priests in Ireland only three years ago.

Last week Irish prime minister Enda Kenny unleashed his anger at the Holy See.

News of monsignor Leanza's recall to Rome broke first on Vatican Radio and it was then confirmed by the Holy See deputy press chief Father Ciro Benedettini.

He stressed that recalling the Nuncio was a sign of just how serious the Vatican was taking the Report and how stunned the Holy See had been by Mr Kenny's attack.
