NEW CITY, N.Y. (AP) — A 45-year-old Roman Catholic priest who admitted stealing $25,000 from his suburban New York parish has been sentenced to five years of probation.

The Rev. Thomas Kreiser had pleaded guilty to grand larceny and could have been sentenced to up to four years in prison.

Prosecutors said Monday that he has paid back the parish and voluntarily sought help for his gambling habit. The district attorney said Kreiser's probation includes mandatory treatment for gambling and substance abuse.

Kreiser was pastor at St. Gregory Barbarigo Church in Garnerville from 2008-2010. He admitted using the church's American Express credit card for personal expenses, online gambling and other recreation.

An audit by the New York Archdiocese discovered the money was missing.
