Panaji, Jul 26 (PTI) A local court has summoned Archbishop of Goa Filipe Neri Ferrao as a witness in a case pertaining to a tiff between a priest and a social worker. The Archbishop will have to be present in the court on August 2 to depose in the Ribandar Church case reported in year 2004.Social activist Aires Rodrigues is fighting the case against a priest Newton Fernandes who had filed a police complaint against the former for threatening him.Aires Rodrigues had claimed that the priest's outburst had stemmed from the fact that he was campaigning against him for allegedly molesting a 13-year-old girl.A morcha was taken out on Ribandar church in 2004 over the allegations. The case against Rodrigues is now being heard by Judicial Magistrate First Class, Panaji, who has issued summons to the Archbishop.Rodrigues had also listed former Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane as one of the witnesses in the case.A court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) has already recorded statements of Rodrigues and 14 others involved in the Ribandar Church case.Fernandes is currently posted in Canada and was not available to testify before the Court.
