A POLICE officer investigating a series of sexual assaults at a Catholic boys school in Ballarat has called for a parliamentary inquiry into the church's handling of the abuse.

Detective Sgt Kevin Carson, of Ballarat police, told the ABC's 7.30 last night that up to 30 students had committed suicide since being abused at St Alipius primary school.

Sgt Carson's call came ahead of the sentencing of the school's former principal, Brother Robert Best, who has been found guilty of 21 counts against eight victims between 1969 and 1988.

He also pleaded guilty in May to six other charges against three boys.

He will be sentenced for all the offences next month.

Anyone with personal problems can call Lifeline on 131 114.
