Giuseppe Leanza - Recalled to the Vatican on Monday

It is understood that the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza, intends to personally present the Vatican's response to the Government's criticisms arising from the Cloyne Report.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has accused the Vatican of encouraging bishops not to report alleged clerical child sex abusers to the gardai and health authorities.

Doubts about whether Archbishop Leanza would personally present the Vatican's eagerly anticipated reply to Foreign Minister Gilmore arose following Monday's recall of the Nuncio to Rome for consultations about the row between the Holy See and the Government.

They were further fuelled by Wednesday's confirmation by the Czech Republic Embassy here that the Vatican is preparing to move the Nuncio to Prague.

But well-placed sources say senior officials in the Holy See expect that Archbishop Leanza will return to Dublin to present its response to Mr Kenny's angry criticisms.

The Taoiseach said the Cloyne Report shows that the Vatican undermined Irish church leaders' own guidelines that allegations of child clerical sexual abuse should be reported to the civil authorities.

Meanwhile, the Vatican's Deputy Spokesman, Fr Ciro Benedettini, has said he expects that the Vatican's response will be delivered by the end of August as requested by the Tanaiste.

A spokesman for Mr Gilmore welcomed the clarification.
