The Attorney General in the Netherlands has decided not to open an inquiry into the alleged sexual abuse of a Kenyan youth by a Dutch bishop. The information given to the Attorney General is deemed insufficient for a judicial inquiry.

The allegations were brought to the attention of the Attorney General after the alleged victim appeared in various media saying a Dutch bishop had sexually abused him as an adolescent during the 1990s in Kenya. The police then conducted an investigation based on this information. However, to open a judicial inquiry the Attorney General requires more substantial information, including a complaint filed by the victim, together with the nature of the sexual abuse, the date the incident and the age of the victim.

The case will not be considered again by the Attorney General unless there is concrete evidence of a crime, possibly with the endorsement of the Kenyan authorities.

The Attorney General expressed no interest in an interview with the alleged sexual abuse victim conducted by an Irish television channel, which Radio Netherlands Worldwide has offered to make available.
