ATTACK: Kenny

IT would be hard to say other than 'they had it coming', when Taoiseach Enda Kenny attacked the Vatican this week.

But it is a pity he, or whoever it was wrote the speech, built it on a false premise. Nowhere in the Cloyne report, does it suggest that the Church deliberately frustrated the inquiry.

If he, or his speechwriter, had read the report in full, they wouldn't have had to make things up. There was enough in it to justify attacking the Church without getting it wrong.

It is a pity too, that he didn't admit that he was part of a Government which, in 1996, failed to introduce mandatory reporting of child abuse when it had the chance to do so.

And it is a pity that some people saw his speech simply as an opportunity to sneer and gloat.

Blaming religion for the woes of the world makes as much sense as blaming atheism for the excesses of Stalin or Mao. None whatever.
