Rabbi Moshe Keller, a Chabad rabbi in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, was arrested on July 26 for the alleged attempted sexual abuse of a child. Leadership of the Lubavitch Jewish community there is beginning to address pedophilia.

But not every Orthodox Jewish community is responding appropriately when such troubling incidents are reported. The Australian Orthodox Jewish community, for example, has been disregarding the issue for far too long.

In the early 1990s, David Kramer, a security guard working at the Chabad-run Yeshivah College in the Orthodox St. Kilda neighborhood of Melbourne, Australia – my husband Jacob's alma mater – was accused of sexually abusing boys at the school. Rather than report these accusations to the police, the school leadership at the time appeared to do what it always does: it conducted its own "internal" investigation, and when the school leadership apparently decided that there was substance to the accusation, they kicked the accused out of Australia and forbade him to return. In other words, they turned it into someone else's problem.
