The Catholic Diocese of Ballarat has defended the church's handling of child sex abuse cases.

There are reports that up to 30 victims of abuse at Ballarat's St Alipius Catholic Boys' School have committed suicide, prompting calls for a parliamentary inquiry.

Ballarat Bishop Peter Connors says the diocese supports the inquiry calls.

He says the church has been helping victims of abuse on a broader level than in the past.

"Yes, nothing's perfect but certainly rather than just being done in-house within our own diocese itself, we have our procedures and we follow those through," he said.

"The person can be assured that they'll be properly heard, rather than just being dealt with locally."
