A LITTLE girl was paraded past child killers and paedophiles while on a visit to her paedophile dad inside one of Victoria's toughest prisons.

Prison sources have confirmed the three-year-old was walked past at least seven sex fiends, including paedophile priest Robert Charles Best, to reach a Port Phillip Prison visiting room where her father was waiting.

Prison spokeswoman Emma Lindell confirmed the inmate was allowed to see his girl last Thursday.

The man is serving two years after being convicted of seven charges of sexually penetrating a child under 16.

He was sentenced as a registered sex offender and must report for the rest of his life. Sources said the little girl was allowed to see her father because it was her birthday.

"She was paraded past these blokes. You could have heard a pin drop. They were ogling her. It was just disgraceful," one source said.

The Herald Sun has been told a child being walked past dangerous sex offenders to the private visiting room was unheard of before last week.

"It's a recipe for disaster. It could have got out of control. It's just not done," the source said.

Ms Lindell said the family was escorted and supervised at all times by prison officers.

"Any visit occurring at Port Phillip Prison will always be authorised and under close supervision of correctional staff. Children attending visits must be accompanied by an adult," she said.

Just days after the incident an inmate, 37, was severely bashed and kicked almost to death by two inmates inside the prison's Scarborough South unit. The shocking attack happened last Sunday.

The victim suffered head injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Ms Lindell said the prisoner had since returned to prison and the matter had been referred to police.

A prison source said staff cutbacks and poor management was putting the lives of inmates and staff at risk.
