A New Castle Grand Jury has indicted a priest on a theft charge for allegedly stealing more than $300,000 from a parishioner.

Attorney General Beau Biden says the indictment was filed against Father Michael Angeloni, 62, following a five-month investigation. The priest is accused of stealing from a parishioner of the Church of the Holy Child, where he previously served as assistant pastor.

Biden says the investigation began in February after the Attorney Generals Senior Protection Initiative received a report from Wilmington Trust about suspicious activity on the alleged victims account. Evidence collected allegedly showed that Father Angeloni solicited money from the parishioner on multiple occasions.

Investigators say the priest claimed the money would be used for certain expenses but then allegedly used the cash for other purposes. Biden says Father Angeloni stole more than $305,000 from the parishioner.

Crimes in which a person abuses a position of trust to financially prey on their victim are especially unconscionable, Attorney General Biden said in a written statement.

The investigation is ongoing. The Attorney General urges any additional victims to contact the Senior Protection Initiative at 302-577-8508.
