Former Roman Catholic Bishop Raymond Lahey will be in an Ottawa courtroom Thursday for a sentencing hearing on a child pornography charge, but a sentence likely won't be handed down before December.

Lahey, 70, pleaded guilty in May to possessing child pornography for the purpose of importing it to Canada.

Lahey, a native of St. John's who resigned as the bishop responsible for the diocese in Antigonish, N.S., was charged in September 2009 after Canadian Border Services agents found pornographic materials on his laptop computer.

The sentencing hearing begins Thursday with evidence from an Ottawa police detective who worked on the case. Crown prosecutors also want to hear from a forensic psychiatrist, but that expert will not be available until December, according to the CBC's Hannah Thibedeau.

The hearing will likely continue then.

Lahey was taken into custody after entering the guilty plea, with his lawyer saying his client wanted to begin serving time immediately.

Lahey faces a minimum of one year in jail.
