The Catholic Dioceses of Owensboro said Friday it cannot substantiate that a man who shot and killed himself outside of a church had been sexually abused by a priest.

In a statement Friday, Bishop William Medley said an independent probe into a Facebook posting by David M. Jarboe, 23, failed to turn up any evidence that he was a victim of sexual abuse.

Owensboro Police Chief Glenn Skeens told The Messenger-Inquirer (http://bit.ly/q0Ss37 ) that the investigation was closed "unless further information is obtained."

Jarboe killed himself in February outside the Blessed Mother Catholic Church. In a Facebook posting that addressed three priests, he thanked one, forgave another and called the third "an evil man."

Jarboe said online that he hoped his message would prevent a child from having to endure what he called the "pain and torment" he had to go through.

Medley said a retired Kentucky State Police detective conducted the investigation on behalf of the diocese and members of Jarboe's family and friends.

Medley said the Diocese held on to the conclusions until the police completed their investigation.

Jarboe had spoken of issues from his youth with friends and others, Medley said, but consistently declined to allege that he had been sexually abused.

"As is so often the case with suicide, more questions are left unanswered than resolved," Medley said. "Obviously, if new information comes to light, we will respond by continuing and extending our own inquiry."
