A US-based support network yesterday urged deeply Catholic Poland to probe the potential scale of sexual abuse of children by priests, and urged possible victims not to suffer in silence.

“We would like the Polish government to open investigations and to determine the extent of the problem of priests abusing children in Poland,” said Barbara Blaine, head of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP).

“We recommend that the Polish government does not need to make the mistakes that the US government, the Irish government, the German government, the Belgian government have all made,” by initially leaving it to the Church to put its own house in order, Blaine told reporters in Warsaw.

“We’d like the Polish government to institute an investigation, similar to the investigations in Ireland,” added Ms Blaine, 55, who said she was raped many times by a priest as a teenager in the US state of Ohio.
