Archdiocese of Boston places Reverend on leave after allegation of sexual abuse of a child: MyFoxBOSTON.com

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - The Archdiocese of Boston says it has placed a priest on administrative leave after receiving an allegation of sexual abuse of a child in the 1980s.

The archdiocese announced Sunday that Rev. John M. Mendicoa, a vicar at Sacred Heart Parish in the Roslindale neighborhood, will remain on leave pending the outcome of a preliminary investigation. The archdiocese said in a news release that it initiated the investigation and notified law enforcement of the allegation.

Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley said he was committed to doing "everything possible" to protect children.

Mendicoa could not be reached for comment. A spokeswoman for the diocese said he cannot live in a parish rectory while on leave. The archdiocese stressed that its decision does not amount to a determination of Mendicoa's guilt or innocence.
