A former Roman Catholic priest who pleaded guilty to theft for stealing more than $400,000 from his former church, in part to feed a gambling addiction, has been sentenced to 60 days in jail and four years of probation.

The Rev. John Regan pleaded guilty in June to continuing a financial crimes enterprise and theft of more than $100,000 over two years when he was pastor at St. Walter Catholic Church.

The Diocese of Joliet removed Regan from the position in July 2008, after an internal audit uncovered accounting irregularities in the parish books.

At Regan's sentencing hearing Tuesday, DuPage County prosecutors called an investigator who said records showed the priest gambled away more than $284,000. Ray Bradford said Regan took the money from a secret "special needs fund."
