Father John Regan, 47, who stole about $300,000 from St. Walter Roman Catholic parish in Roselle to fuel a gambling habit, is scheduled to be sentenced today in DuPage County Circuit Court after pleading guilty in June to theft. He could face up to 15 years in prison.

Regan opened up a special church account within weeks of taking over the reins of the parish in 2006 and deposited the stolen funds into it.

Free on bond, Regan has been "suspended from his priestly ministry" and is living at a Shorewood parish, according to a diocese spokesman. The diocese, the spokesman said, has reimbursed the parish for "the full loss."

Parishioners whose offerings were part of the theft are expected to testify at today's sentencing hearing.
