Canadian police on Wednesday said an imam who led an Islamic society in Toronto has been charged with sexually assaulting male and female students.

Mohammad Masroor, 48, was arrested last week for allegedly assaulting five victims between November 1, 2008 and July 28 of this year, and police warned there may be more abroad as he "lived and travelled extensively internationally."

Masroor is the imam of the Bangladeshi Baitul Mukarram Islamic Society in Toronto and has taught there, in his home, and in Florida, Michigan and Bangladesh.

"Mohammad Masroor was a leader in the community, he was in a position of trust. Because he was in a position of power, we believe there are other victims," Detective Constable Karen Armstrong told reporters.
