- Farouk Imded ambled slowly towards the small single-story brick mosque, both stunned and saddened by the news that one of the imams is in jail.

“At this mosque here? He’s a very good priest,” an astonished Imded said. “He’s a very good man. I don’t know what has happened.

“When you hear these kings of things, it’s very shameful,” he said.

Indeed, the allegations levelled against Mohammad Masroor have stunned the membership of the mosque, especially now during the holy month of Ramadan.

An imam is a respected position within the community, said Mohammed Siddique, a member of the mosque.

“In our religious point of view, he’s the top respected guy,” Siddique said. “And we should believe he should be a model man. His way of thinking…should be a model for us.

“If this news is true, this is horrible and disheartening news for us,” he said.

Assistant Imam Abdul Fattah Aboud, who used to be an imam at the same mosque, was left stunned by the news.

“This is shocking news for me,” Aboud said. “I know him. He’s very religious, very nice person.

“I speak from the core of my heart, it’s shocking to me, really shocking,” he said.

Imded said Masroor taught Arabic to young boys and girls every day, Aboud said. And others said he also taught the Koran to young people.

The kids liked Masroor, Aboud said: “He taught them very nice.”

Others said Masroor also led Friday prayers at the mosque.

“He taught in the evening, after school,” Imded said.

“He was a good man,” 12-year-old Sajid said. “He didn’t do anything bad.
