The Rhode Island State Police have arrested a deacon for indecent exposure, and disorderly conduct.

The arrest came on August 13th, at 1 p.m. at the Route 95 South weigh station in Richmond. A trooper from the State Police Hope Valley Barracks was dispatched to the area for reports of a man exposing himself.

Once on scene, the trooper witnessed Robert Alessio, age 70 of Westerly walking out of the woods. Mr. Alessio was questioned by the officer on scene, and positively identified as the man exposing himself by the person that reported the incident.

Police then took Alessio into custody where he was processed, arraigned by a Justice of the Peace, and released on personal reconnaissance. Alessio has a future court date scheduled for August 31, 2011.

Bishop Thomas Tobin of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, issued a statement on Tuesday, in which he calls the arrest of Deacon Alessio "a source of profound sadness for [Bishop Tobin] and for the entire church in the Diocese."

Bishop Tobin also stated that Alessio is not being allowed to serve as a Deacon.
