PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roman Catholic priests in the Philadelphia archdiocese have formed an independent association in the wake of the latest clergy-abuse crisis.

Fr. Chris Walsh, an organizer, says the goal is to come together amid "a vacuum of information" about how the archdiocese is handling the problem.

A grand jury this year charged three priests with rape and a monsignor with endangering children, and said 37 suspected abusers remained on duty. The archdiocese later suspended many of them.

Walsh says the Association of Philadelphia Priests has drawn about 100 priests to recent meetings. He calls them "very Orthodox men who love the church."

But Walsh says the priests, like others, are struggling to understand how the problem continued.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Friday on the group's formation.
