A former Hunter Valley Catholic Priest will have his fate determined by a jury after his application for a judge-only trial was rejected.

69 year old former Catholic Priest Dennis John Corrigan is charged with five historic child sex offences, including sexual intercourse with a person under 16 and under his authority.

He has pleaded not guilty to all offences which allegedly occurred at a convent in the early 1980s when Corrigan was a parish priest at Windale.

His trial was due to get underway in the Newcastle District Court today, but Judge Ralph Coolahan has adjourned proceedings to tomorrow to allow for legal argument.

He did however make a ruling against an application for a judge-only trial.

He told the court it should take place with a jury.
