Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (+1-314 862 7688 home, +1-314 503 0003 cell, SNAPdorris@gmail.com)

Anything that Magee does now is meaningless. For decades, he was a powerful figure in the church hierarchy in Rome and in Ireland. Instead of using his considerable power to protect kids, he used it to endanger kids.

Magee isn’t stupid. He knows he must say something. He’s smart enough to sound contrite in public. But such words, at this point, mean nothing.

We urge Irish citizens and Catholics to ignore belated and begrudging apologies from clearly corrupt church officials. We urge them, instead, to keep fighting for real secular reforms that will deter decision-makers from acting callously, recklessly and deceptively with children’s safety in the future.
