  Birmingham Man Arrested in Connection with Beating of Priest

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Birmingham Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the beating of a Catholic priest last Wednesday. Calvin Payne, 55, of Birmingham was arrested without incident at his home, police said in a news release.

Payne has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the beating of the Rev. Emmanuel Isi, 57, associate pastor of St. Paul's Cathedral in Birmingham.

Isi was assaulted Wednesday in the 5500 block of Avenue H in Belview Heights following a traffic accident.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue took Isi to UAB Hospital for treatment. Isi is expected to recover from his injuries.

Payne is in custody in the Birmingham City Jail, with bond set at $60,000.
