Bishops in Dr Magee's former diocese welcomed the move

Bishop John Magee has offered to meet the victims of child sexual abuse in the diocese of Cloyne.

The move has been welcomed by a spokesperson for the Catholic bishops.

The spokesperson also welcomed Bishop Magee's decision to speak publicly, over a month after the controversial Cloyne report was published.

Judge Yvonne Murphy made clear that Bishop Magee was responsible over a 12-year period for the failure of his former diocese to respond appropriately to child sexual abuse allegations.

Dr Magee told RTÉ News that he was ashamed by the abuse that occurred.

The Association of Catholic Priests, however, have aimed criticism at the retired bishop, alleging that he does not fully understand the extent of the abuse experienced by the victims.

Survivor's advocacy group One in Four welcomed Bishop Magee's offer, although highlighted that they did not believe he had "fully comprehended" the Cloyne Report's findings.

In the report it was revealed that he misinformed the HSE when claiming abuse allegations were reported to the authorities.

Ms Lewis, Director of the One in Four group said that the bishop needs to hold a full news conference in order to answer the victim's questions.
