A former Port Pirie priest who was stood down as principal of Saint Mark's College has been jailed for two years in Victoria for indecent assault.

Michael Aulsebrook, 55, had pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault against a 12-year-old student in the early 1980s.

Aulsebrook had been teaching at a school at Sunbury on Melbourne's outskirts.

He will serve only nine months of his sentence as the remaining 15 months has been suspended.

Staff at Saint Mark's College says Aulsebrook was stood down in 2004 when the sexual abuse allegations arose.

He left Port Pirie in South Australia and later resigned from the priesthood.
