OS ANGELES (AP) — A notorious child-molesting former priest scheduled to leave prison is facing an effort by Los Angeles prosecutors to keep him in custody indefinitely.

Sixty-three-year-old Michael Baker has served half of his 10-year sentence and was slated for release when prosecutors moved to have him committed to a mental hospital.

Baker made a court appearance Friday but a hearing was postponed until Sept. 13 because the judge declared a conflict.

Baker pleaded guilty to molesting two boys but evaded prosecution on many other allegations after a U.S. Supreme Court decision blocked cases that fell outside a statute of limitations.

Prosecutors say he is likely to engage in sexually violent predatory behavior if released. His lawyers are seeking dismissal of the motion.
