  Victims of Clergy Abuse Call Cardinal's List 'Outrageous'

Victims of clergy sexual abuse and their attorney slammed Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley today for omitting the names of their abusers from a new list of 159 priests and deacons publicly accused of molestation.

Attorney Mitchell Garabedian called the list released yesterday on bostoncatholic.org an "inadequate attempt to satisfy a moral imperative" because it doesn't include the names of priests who are now dead or who were members of a religious order.

"It's unconscionable," Garabedian said. "It doesn't help the victims heal."

Robert Perron said he was abused from age 9 to 11 by a priest who died in 2002. That priest's name was not on the list.

"I think that's outrageous," Perron said. "What happened to me doesn't count at all."

In a seven-page letter explaining his reasoning behind the policy revision, O'Malley said, "I am acutely aware of the harm that the abuse of children by clergy has caused in the lives of so many. And while I know there will be some who believe our policy changes should go further, after careful consultation and consideration of views expressed by so many people and groups, I believe that the changes we are making are appropriate ..."
