Diocese accuses SNAP of hypocrisy: wwlp.com

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield Catholic Diocese posted a list of 15 priests accused of sexual abuse on its website, but a victim advocacy group says it's not good enough.

Now the diocese is firing back saying the group isn't practicing what it preaches.

The Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests or SNAP says there are dozens of other names not on the list.

SNAP member Bill Nash said, ""We don't know who these people are and where they are the credibly accused child molesters how can people be safe if we don't know who they are and where they are."

Diocese spokesperson Mark Dupont says they have always released the names of credible abusers that are alive; they refuse to publicize the names of priests who have passed away and did not have a chance to defend themselves.

He said, "Snap, I'm sorry, has its own problematic history"

Dupont claims a man connected with the group, Dr. Steve Taylor of Louisiana is now in jail for child pornography and SNAP stood by him.

He said, "They go around telling us how to conduct our business and here's this Dr. Steven Taylor not a case from 40 years ago this is recent, he has plead guilty to this, 23 counts of possession of child pornography, he's serving a sentence now and they're writing letters now asking us for leniency this contradicts everything SNAP has ever told us and others to do."

Nash told 22News Dr. Taylor is the spouse of a SNAP leader. He was unaware of the situation until we mentioned it.
