The Vatican has responded to the criticisms levelled against them in the Cloyne Report.

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore received a lengthy document from the Vatican which sympathised with the victims of sexual abuse in the Cloyne diocese between 1996 and 2009 but rejected the judgement made by Enda Kenny made back in July.

They want on to state that they had in no way interfered with any inquiry into the atrocities that took place under the reign of Bishop John Magee.

They also rejected claims of calling a Framework Document drawn up by Irish bishops on how to deal with sex abuse cases was "merely a study document".
