The Vatican is saying that it did not hinder sex abuse investigations in Ireland. This remark comes after Ireland's prime minister sharply denounced the Catholic Church's alleged cover ups of abuse, resulting in the Vatican's recall of its ambassador, Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza, in July.

Responding to what has become known as "the Cloyne Report," the pope issued a detailed letter to the Irish government, denying the accusations and offering collaboration with the Irish government to improve relations. The report suggested that the Diocese of Cloyne failed to act on the allegations against 19 priests between 1996 and 2009.

The Vatican response says that the Congregation for the Clergy urged caution to prevent their good intentions from contradicting canon law and from creating processes that would invalidate their efforts. It also noted that the Irish Parliament decided it would not be mandatory to report cases of abuse.

The Irish government still has reservations about the church's handling of abuse cases and will issue an official response.
