CATHOLIC PRIMATE Cardinal Seán Brady has appealed to people to read the Vatican's response to issues raised in the Cloyne report before passing judgment on it.

Welcoming the Vatican's response to the Cloyne report, Cardinal Brady referred to it as the comprehensive reply of the Holy See to the Irish Government.

It conveyed "the profound abhorrence of the Holy See for the crime of sexual abuse and its sorrow and shame for the terrible sufferings which the victims of abuse and their families have endured within the church of Jesus Christ, a place where this should never happen", he said.

The "time taken to prepare the reply, and its content, indicates the commitment on the part of the Holy See to deal with this matter . . . sensitively". It showed an appreciation of the questions raised, he said, and of the importance for survivors of abuse of combating this crime.
