The attorney for a woman who sued the Catholic Diocese of Crookston over allegations of sexual abuse says he will announce a settlement of the lawsuit this morning.

According to a news release from St. Paul attorney Jeff Anderson, the woman who sued the Crookston Diocese based on allegations that she was sexually abused in 2004 at age 14 will speak publicly for the first time at a news conference scheduled for 11 a.m. today at her attorney’s office.

She will receive $750,000 through the settlement, according to the news release from her attorney. The release also states that the settlement includes new outreach and child protection measures.

The woman, now 21, claims she was sexually abused by the Rev. Joseph Jeyapaul, a priest from India who returned to India in 2005. Jeyapaul served as a priest in Greenbush, Minn., at the time of the alleged abuse.

A representative from the Diocese of Crookston could not be reached for comment because the office was closed for Labor Day.
