Ontario Superior Court Justice Lynn Ratushny said Scott Robert Bareham, himself a victim of sexual abuse, had "almost inexplicably" subjected two other innocent children and their families to the torment and pain he knew all too well. "Notwithstanding the violations he himself had suffered as a young boy and the consequences imposed on (his abuser), he succumbed to his urges and decided, as an adult at age 30, to victimize these trusting young boys," Ratushny said. Ratushny also found Bareham, 33, committed a "prolonged and flagrant" breach of trust of both victims, their families and the church, which provided him a "safe haven" after learning about his childhood abuse. Bareham admitted to fondling and performing oral sex on the two boys, beginning when they were 11 and 13. Bareham met the boys through his Ottawa church. The sexual abuse included a "game" Bareham frequently played with the 11-year-old boy where they would bind one another to a bed with handcuffs and chains Bareham kept in his apartment. It also included showing the boy pornographic movies. Bareham abused one of the boys for five months, the other for two years. Psychiatrist Dr. Bradley Booth testified Bareham was a homosexual pedophile, sadist and a masochist. Ratushny said a three-year prison sentence would be appropriate for Bareham in light of the circumstances, but she elected to sentence him to two years less a day. That sentence was on top of the seven-and-a-half months he spent in presentence custody and ensured he could be monitored on probation for an additional three years, the judge said. She also recommended that Bareham be sent to the specialized St. Lawrence Valley Correctional and Treatment Centre, where he can receive help for his pedophilia and other issues.
