AKRON, Ohio - A Cleveland area priest is on leave after an alleged incident involving a child in the 1970s.

The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland said Rev. Mathew Ischay, 62, is on administrative leave from the St. Paul Parish in Akron. According to the diocese, a civil suit was filed against Ischay in Cuyahoga County Pleas Court, claiming he molested a child.

Ischay, who was a pastor at Blessed Sacrament from 1987 to 2010, will be on administration leave while the claims are investigated. The diocese said he will not be allowed on parish property or wear clerical attire

“The Diocese of Cleveland continues to be wholly committed to protecting children and helping to heal victims of abuse. We are deeply sorry for the pain suffered by survivors of abuse due to actions of some members of the clergy, as nothing is more important than protecting children,” in a statement posted on the group’s website.

The diocese wants anyone with information about alleged misconduct to contact them at 216-334-2999. Organizations like Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests urge people to do go to church leaders, but instead report the abuse to local law enforcement.
