Police Saturday arrested a Hindu priest for attempt to rape and recovered arms and ammunition from him in Jammu division, officials told Kashmir Dispatch. They said Mahant Vishveshwar Kumar, a resident of district Khagria, Bihar, was arrested today from Janipur area after a woman lodged complaint with the police.

Kajal Jamwal, the victim, a resident of Bakshi Nagar, said in her complaint that she got married to Rajesh Jamwal in 2009 as per Arya Samaj customs in Arya Samaj Mandir, Janipur. The marriage went in troubled waters in a short span of time.

"She asked Mahant Vishveshwar of Arya Samaj Mandir, Janipur regarding papers of her marriage several times but he denied to give them on one pretext or the other," officials said.

"Yesterday evening when she approached the Mahant for her marriage papers he entered into arguments with her, beat her and attempted to rape her and also threatened her by showing revolver," the added.

The woman, then approached the police, who registered the case under FIR No. 128/2011 U/S 376/382/511 RPC Janipur police station.

During investigation the Mahant was arrested and a 0.38 calibre USA made revolver, two double barrel guns, one single barrel gun, one bolt action rifle and one air gun along with live rounds of the weapons were recovered from him, officials said.

The Mahant had come to Jammu in 1992 and stayed in different temples of the city and the revolver belonged to Mahant Shivnath Guru of Peer Kho Temple Jammu which he had stolen from there in the year 2004 after his death.

Officials believe that investigation in both the cases would unravel more facts relating to the weapons and associates of the accused Mahant.
