Advocates are pushing a bill to eliminate the statute of limitations on sex crimes against children in Massachusetts.

Currently murder is the only crime in the state that can be prosecuted no matter how long ago it occurred.

Supporters want to add sex crimes against children to that list, saying it can take decades for victims to report the crimes.

In 2006, Massachusetts extended the statute of limitations for sex crimes from 15 to 27 years.

Supporters of statutes of limitations say they help give finality to the criminal justice process and guard against prosecutions when memories have become rusty.

Attorney General Martha Coakley said it's important to have statutes of limitations that allow victims to come forward when it's appropriate for them, but also in a time frame that allows for prosecution.
