LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The sodomy case against a former Louisville priest is delayed as lawyers say they need more time to prepare for trial.

The Rev. James Schook is charged with seven counts of sodomy from incidents from April 1971 to April 1972.

Schook allegedly abused a boy less than 14 years old.

The archdiocese of Louisville temporarily removed Schook from the ministry in 2009, while he served as pastor at St. Ignatius Church. He was removed permanently shortly thereafter when the commonwealth indicted Schook and concluded the claims of sexual abuse were valid.

"The reason is much of the commonwealth's discovery is and allegations are events that allegedly occurred 35 to 40 years ago," said defense attorney David Lambertus.

"The defense attorneys have had ample time. I brought this to light three years ago. There's been so many changes," said Michael Stansbury, who said Schook also abused him.

While the indictment mentions only one victim, many others have come forward. Stansbury said he wanted a just end to this case, but with its delays, he said it's been traumatic.

"It makes me very upset. This is the second postponement. You can't sleep for days, getting prepared for this mentally and physically and I feel bad for all the other victims," Stansbury said.

The court set another pretrial date for November.

The trial is expected to begin sometime next year.
