Royden Wood's conviction on three of five sexual-assault charges is a victory for all women victimized by an abuse of power, lawyer Phillip Millar said.

"These kinds of cult leaders get people under their control and say … 'They consented to sex,'" Millar said about the former Ambassador Baptist Church pastor. "When you have a religious cult, the leader of that cult can get women to do things under the pretense of it being godly."

Millar said it's the same attitude that affected his client John Milonas, who filed a civil lawsuit against Wood in August.

"His abuse of power was rampant throughout the church," Millar said Tuesday.

Milonas is seeking $1.5 million in damages and says he was abused and tortured from 1985 to 1987 while attending the church's school. Wood was convicted in April 2008 of sex-related crimes and 12 counts of assault, including some pertaining to Milonas.

In the case jurors decided yesterday, five women testified they had sex with Wood in various locations including the church office, vehicles and the pastor's bedroom.

The women said they were forced into sex while seeking counsel from Wood for various issues.
